The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, March 11, 2006 Crooked Lake |
|
Bass Fan-attics, This is Chuck's fault/good idea. I was not going to write about last Saturday on Crooked Lake because this latest story will reverse the fear that you have about my exploits on that lake. Here goes, anyway. The weather was mostly outstanding. Wind was the only factor, and the one I dislike probably the most as it makes for miserable boat positioning. Let me tell you about my partner for the day. He and I have worked together at the phone company before, he with Lucent/AGCS and I with GTE/Verizon. He is an ex-submariner (take notice Hugh), and a very good angler in his own right. Scott Harding is his moniker and he likes it when I take him away from household chores. His wife and daughter, on the other hand, do not. In all honesty though, he takes good care of family, he comes out to play with me infrequently. He's another one of you who revels in beating me from the aft deck of my boat. It's my boat, not "U boat" as what Scott crewed on in the Navy. People in the back of my boat are not supposed to show me up. Everybody seems to want to beat ole Billy every day they fish with this old salt. Wouldn't have it any other way, but don't let that get out of the creel. Here we are, on one of my favorite lakes, heading out to slay the little green fish once again. Yeah I caught four "keepers", but "toothy" critters do not count in our club. I was able to boat four in the 1 ½ feet to 2 ½ feet length range. I caught the first one on a Spinnerbait, and the other three on a shallow diving crankbait. Go ahead and use these this Saturday. Maybe you too can get hooked up with Mr. Jack his own self. We got to see more of the lake than I had in the past, and I got to NOT find fish in all of these spots. Maybe I will get a little co-operation this weekend. I hope so, or the bubble I said was going to burst will do so earlier than I thought. I showed Scott where I took the picture of two Ospreys flying around their nest. It was a beautiful picture that I shot by mistake. Lucky at fishing ! Lucky at hunting ! Lucky at "piture takin'" too ! Is this sinking in yet ? I'm just plain lucky at most things. Maybe just not with wo.... OOPS ! My bad ! Back to the lake at hand Billy... ! The post was missing one of its cross arms that held the nest upright, and the nest was gone. Hurricanes did their damage last year. We spent all day casting up a storm. No storm appeared! We had a tough time finding sheltered water. We'd move to a calm spot, and darned if the wind didn't change with us. Freshwater King Neptune having a bit of fun with us I would fathom. I didn't lose any tackle or rod/reel combos or life jackets so it was a relatively inexpensive day for me. PSST ! The real reason I bring Scott with me is the really good food he brings for us to eat and the drinks we rehydrate with as the day goes along. I could break into song here with Keith Urban's "Days Go By" song, but I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's eardrums. The sandwiches are from a shop near where he lives and they are wonderful. Wish I had one now ! "A day of fishing is better than my best day at work." I heard that somewhere. We had a great time, and we "stopped and saw the roses". Don't forget the sunscreen when you are outside. Scott and I both put ours on early, although I did ask Scott to hide the pink "Waterbabies" brand he was using. How embarrassing ! I was supposed to get some pictures taken after catching a fish for the new "archives" section of the website that Chuck will be adding so we can move some of the earlier articles off of the front page, but didn't think you'd want to see me with a Pickerel. I also suspect that you didn't want an advertising spot with Scott and the "Waterbabies" SPF 50 sunscreen. My "bullfrog" SPF 36 would have been bad enough. I brought my tournament shirt so I would look good, but that won't happen anyway. Said it before any of you could ! I will get a picture for that segment on down the road apiece. How do you like the way the website is changing ? I think it is great. Move your cursor on your computers over the pictures, and you will get a short dissertation about what is happening with that picture. The cover of the web page has a cute sentence about Scott Ellis at the last tournament. Tee ! Hee ! If you like the new look, thank Chuck for the work he is doing on it. I like it, and I suspect it will get only better as we progress through this year. The Good = Fishing !
